What is the Clipper Race?

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is one of the world's greatest ocean challenges, a 40,000 nautical mile journey spanning six ocean crossings and up to ten months at sea. What makes it unique is that most crew members are ordinary people with no prior sailing experience, trained from scratch and racing alongside seasoned skippers across some of the most demanding waters on the planet.

In the summer of 2026, Oban becomes part of the race route as the fleet arrives on Leg 8. The Atlantic Homecoming, having raced from North America as part of the final stretch towards the finish port of Portsmouth. Nevis Radio will be on the ground to bring you all the colour, drama, and celebration of the fleet's arrival.

Visitor Information

Planning to head to Oban for the Clipper Race? Here's what you need to know.

Getting to Oban

Oban is roughly 2.5 hours from Glasgow by road or train. From Fort William it's about 40 minutes south on the A828. ScotRail runs regular direct services from Glasgow Queen Street. Citylink & Ember coaches also serve the route.

Accommodation

Oban fills up very quickly during major events. Book accommodation as early as possible. Check VisitScotland or local listings — nearby towns like Connel, Taynuilt, and Inveraray are also worth considering.

The Waterfront

The fleet berths on Oban's North Pier. Spectating along the waterfront is free. Arrive early for the fleet's arrival to get a good vantage point — it's a spectacular sight as the yachts sail into the Firth of Lorn.

Parking & Travel

Oban town centre parking is limited and will be very busy during the stopover. Consider using the Park & Ride or arriving by train. Check Traffic Scotland for updates closer to the event.
